Moon phases for Southern hemisphere

There’s no need for being sorry, you don’t control the weather [no matter how detailed you present it] - and I’m glad to hear it passed around you.
Actually, since this is kinda your feature, it’s all up to you how true it will be to the real world - just do stuff at your own pace, that’s how I’m going…
And furthermore I like taking the time, and sort out what I can.
I like doing this stuff, and appreciate the feedback.

Hi again Fl?gger…

Finally got some fine weather here in Brisbane and a cloudless evening! Okay just walked in from outside from looking at the moon with a pair of binoculars and trying to match the WW moon icons to what I’m seeing. Soooo, I think starting from the Northern Hemisphere moon icons is best, because I can describe what needs to be done with them to get the moon looking as we see it “down under”. If the Northern Hemisphere icons are flipped horizontally, along the East-West axis, so that East becomes West, and West becomes East, then that is what the moon looks like from here. A good way to visualise this is to do a “Horizontal Flip” of the Northern Hemisphere moon icons using IrfanView. I hope this helps… I’m not sure how to imbed an image in this response so can’t (as yet) post the image from IrfanView.

Thnx for all your patience. Looking forward to seeing the “finished product” when you get a chance to work on it.

Have a good day,
Charles

I’m sorry I didn’t come back to you before, but I’ve just given this a good look, and my bet is now that somethings wrong with the moon icons from weather.com - to me they seem to be flipped along the horizontal axis compared to just about any other picture i could find… I’m thinking of maybe solving this by using another set of icons, though I have yet to find a proper set - thought about http://www.calculatorcat.com/cs/mm/i/m/m[0-40].gif - I still have to work a little on this part…

As to fix it up for your hemisphere, Charles, you can make a temporary fix by going to the CSSplendid folder, open the style.css, and change the line

tr.southern table img.moonPhase {filter: FlipH FlipV;}

to

tr.southern table img.moonPhase {filter: FlipH;}

it’s somewhere between line 70 and 80, I think…

I’ll keep think for a while… Please feel free to help me…

You are assuming that the images weather.com shows are a) an actual image of the moon rather than merely a representation of the moon b) that the image was created by someone in the northern hemisphere rather than someone in the southern hemishphere. It could very well be that the sole intent of weather.com image is to show the shape of the moon and nothing more.

Maybe CSSplendid could be enhanced to access moon images on the hd like ww does with weather images.

First of, thanx for all the pics

But second, I try not to assume to much… The assumption of the pictures being from the northern hemisphere was due to this thread being started to rotate them for the southern. And I can see they are not actual pictures of the moon, but why put wrong markings on the drawings if they were just ment to show the shape… I guess I just figured [like probably many other] the icons was somewhat based on the how the moon looks… Can’t see why they should use a mirror image in any way… Or maybe I just used a pair of bad eyes to look at it all…?

I did think of using custom icons, but don’t know when I’ll get around to it…

Fl?gger I didn’t mean for that first “you” to be so personal. I left the word “guys” out after it.

The moon image weather.com is using could have originally been a part of someone’s desk calendar and when it was scanned the calendar was sideways or upside down even.

An option for custom icons would be to use icons directly from a URL other than weather.com rather than creating a moon skin folder. Another option would be to take drawdeselrahc’s binoculars away.

Saturday is a full moon.
If you compare weather.com’s image http://image.weather.com/web/common/moonicons/52/15.gif for it
with an actual picture of the moon, http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/gif/moons/m200.gif or http://www.koin.com/weather/images/moonphases/new/m16.gif, there is no comparison.

Weather.com’s moon is a drawing of something that looks like a moon but certainly not what the real moon looks like, no matter how you flip it.

Maybe they’re using a picture of one of Saturn’s moons. Or the reverse side of ours.

well, if you just flip the weather.com moon top to bottom, it could very well be what we see, just rotated a little bit [about 1/8 of a cycle] - it’s odd, but it would be kinda possible, due to certain aspects of the orbit alignments… Could perhaps also just be because the picture[s] wasn’t taken on earth, but somewhere a little outside the atmosphere…? But no matter what, they’re certainly mixed up…
I think a new icon set would be the way to go, if you want the moon right - but then what about the normal forecast icons that has the moon on them?

It would just be another option, Classic vs Realistic, for the moon images.

You will have to extract the last 6 characters of WW’s moon’s URL to add to an alternate base URL, but it should certainly be doable I would think.

The new Stone Soup forecast skin now uses real moon images. See http://www.singerscreations.com/forum/v … php?t=1120

Hi EdP & Fl?gger… Sorry about taking so long to post a message. I didn’t realise that the forum system got changed and that I had to reset my password! Then I had some difficulty in working out just how to do this until I read Mike’s post about the Forum Changes!

Hey EdP I like your sense of humour! They’re actually my partner’s binoculars so you’ll have to fight her for them!

I have modified an series of images (by someone else) of the moon phases from new moon through new moon as I see them from Brisbane. Could one of you please let me know how to “attach” an image to a post so I can send the image for you guys to look at and perhaps implement in the Splendid Skin?

Thnx muchly,
drawdeselrahc

Sounds good Charles  I’ll be looking forward to seeing what you see… could you perhaps also include the original pictures you modified, for reference?

http://www.singerscreations.com/Forum/faq.php#24

drawdeselrahc do the real moon images in the Stone Soup skin match up better to what you’re seeing? The images weather.com uses are not real moon images. Download this webpage and open it to see what I am referring to:

http://rapidshare.de/files/21191769/MoonX.html.html

As for posting your images, if you zip them you can upload them to www.rapidshare.de and post the link here. Rapidshare is free and like all free things on the web it has ads. But it does work.

Hi Fl?gger… Couldn’t manage to send the images to this forum, so I sent them to your email address (I hope this was okay). I hope you find them useful. I’d be very interested how the northern hemisphere images compare to what you see in your home country. Does the moon appear as in the images for the northern hemisphere?

Regards,
Charles

Hi EdP. I’ve looked at the MoonX.html files, and they don’t look much like what I see down here in Brisbane. I have followed your suggestion to try and upload my zipped moon files to RapidShare, so I hope that it worked. The file can be found at:

http://rapidshare.de/files/22266976/Moon_Stuff.zip.html

This should contain two sets of images - one for the northern hemisphere, and one for the moon as I see it (modified from the northern hemsphere images - which are NOT my images). I hope you find these useful. I’m not sure if this works so please let me know.

Regards
Charles

I got them drawdeselrahc. Most enlightening.

In that real moon images do not match the drawings that weather.com uses, regardless of orientation, it may explain why weather.com uses them. Rather than appearing to be correct for one hemisphere they’re wrong regardless of hemisphere thus showing no bias anywhere.

If you really really want WW to display real moon images for your point of view we’ll need to be creative. IF you can create your views as individual images in a folder on your hd using the naming scheme that weather.com uses for their moons then we can direct you to customize either Flugger’s or my skin’s Current.wtp to use them rather than weather.com’s.

To verify your moon folder’s image names you can modify the moonx file that you downloaded previously to compare them with weather.com’s images.

Hey Charles, and thanks for the pictures - they brought much enlightenment.
I just added EdP’s moon pictures, compared them to the piX you sent, and redid the rotation accordingly - the result is available for download @ http://www.singerscreations.com/forum/v … php?t=1200

I hope it looks just the way you wanted it to, and look forward to any feedback

EDIT:
I suspect this might be where you found your picture: http://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/docs/moon_phases.html

Hi Fl?gger… Sorry for the long time since my last post. My laptop died big time and I had to reload from my restore partition & then (slowly) rebuild all my programs. I have reloaded most of the useful stuff (browser, Open Office, SPSS, etc) and am now getting to the important stuff like WW, Google Earth etc.

I have downloaded your latest skin and will install it asap and let you know what I think (tho judging by your previous efforts, I’ll have nothing to complain about  ).

The website you quoted was the one that I got the moon picture from - thnx for reminding me where I looked!

All the best, and thnx, Charles

Hi EdP! As you can see I’m back online after a serious system crash! Yep I have the images as separate files (I had to cut up the original file and rotate the images and the reassembled them into one pix). I’ll try and do what you suggested and let you know how I go. I’ll also install Fl?gger’s skin to see how that looks. If I’m successful, I’ll ask you how to modify the xml to point to my HD.

By the way, thnx for your perseverence with this! I really appreciate your input and the input from Fl?gger too!

Hi again Fl?gger… Installed your skin and found that the settings for moon icons & rotation keep getting reset every time I maximise WW, which means that I have to keep going back to the Options dialog to tick the two checkboxes to use real images & rotate for southern hemisphere. Can this be fixed?

Thnx
Charles
