WWL V6.1.09 (un)graceful recovery from Sleep Mode

I use Sleep Mode on my Vista SP2 x64 Business system. Sleep Mode is set to return without Lock. After coming out of Sleep Mode, WWL’s animated maps no longer animate. Retrieving weather does not resolve this issue. It requires closing/restarting WWL to regain animation.

Can anything be done to enhance WWL’s recovery from Sleep Mode?

Where are the animated maps? On your desktop?

They are in the Maps manager as the links below:

Do those maps open in the Weather Watcher Live map viewer window or in your default web browser? What happens if you open one of those maps directly in IE after exiting sleep mode?

I typically open these maps via the Map Manager. They work properly either via the Map Manager or IE8 until returning from Sleep Mode. Then they open but are not animated via the Map Manager…they are animated if opened in IE8.

You could try checking the “View maps in default web browser” box in the “Maps” section of the Weather Watcher Live Options window.

Yeah, I know that would work, but the maps are small when opened in IE8. #-o

I thought that this issue was related to using Sleep mode (which I recently started using instead of shutting down). However, I am experiencing this problem with animated maps randomly, even on a fresh startup of WWL. I’ve had the maps not animate when viewed shortly after a fresh startup of WWL…even after doing a manual update of the weather. And I’ve had the maps start out animating okay and then stopping at some point during the WWL run. Most of the time, just closing/restarting WWL will cause them to animate again. When the animation stops, it is for all of the animated maps…not just isolated to one map.

I’ve been using these same animated maps for many months. The non-animation issue started in the more current versions of WWL…6.1.03+. The problem only occurs when viewing the maps via the WWL Map Manager. I use the animated weather icons of Meteo Consult and they always animated properly.

Update: Because I started using the Meteo Consult animated weather icons at about the same time as I started noticing this map issue, I have switched off these weather icons to see if that clears up the map animation issue. Will advise as to whether this change clears up the map issue.

Have not had any animated map freezing since I removed the antimated Meteo Consult weather icons. Looks like WWL does not like too much animation

The maps and weather icons are displayed within an Internet Explorer control. While that control is used within Weather Watcher Live, it’s essentially just an instance of Internet Explorer.

Perhaps it’s your system that doesn’t like too much animation? I didn’t see anyone else discuss this yet, so I think it’s safe to assume that it’s not a widespread issue.

Thanks for the feedback Mike.

Friday, I upgraded to Windows 7 x64 Professional and also WWL V6.1.13. I reactivated the Meteo Consult icons for the Forecast icons. My system is a pretty powerful Dell so I don’t think its a system limitation issue…could be wrong…but I don’t think so. Will advise as to whether the issue returns for the animated maps. Thus far it has not.

Running the Meteo Consult animated icons along with animated maps appears to be causing the animated maps to stop working on Win 7 too. The problem occurred after 3 days on Windows 7. I removed the Meteo Consult animated icons and have had no map problems since. The map problem appears after coming out of Sleep/Standby mode. JFI.
