Understanding the radar maps

Does the purple in the cloud cover represent rain?
How can one tell if its a thunderstorm or kust light rain?

Many thanks

It probably depends on the map’s originating site. And since my crystal ball is in the shop to be cleaned its hard to guess which map you’re referring to. :icon_smile:

Sorry
I was referring to the satellite maps

You’ll have to check with the source of the map. It’s possible that each source has different meanings for the same colors.

ryan2801, you’re killing me. Can you give me the specific name or URL of the map?

For example: http://www.intellicast.com/WeatherImg/S … /world.gif ([World/West] satellite) and http://image.weather.com/images/sat/reg … 20x486.jpg ([United States/SouthEast] satellite) are both satellite images but from different sources. The color legend of one may be totally irrevant to the other.

The bottom line is you need to go to the base website displaying the map and see what it shows for their legend. In the preceeding examples one is www.wsi.com, the other is www.weather.com.

Ok? :icon_smile:

Thats the one!

Out of 346 maps I by chance choose the right one!!! I got to go buy a Lotto ticket ASAP. :lol:

If you go Intellicast they have a radar map with a color legend;
http://www.intellicast.com/IcastPage/Lo … odnav=none

And they have a Surface Analysis using radar and satellite data that has a color legend;
http://www.intellicast.com/IcastPage/Lo … odnav=none

I assume they use the same legend for their satellite images. Why they don’t have it on the map you’re seeing, I don’t know. Best way to find out, write to Intellicast and ask them. http://www.intellicast.com/IcastFeedback/Feedback.aspx :icon_smile:
