PNG format wallpaper

Could you add the ability to use PNG files as wallpaper

hmmmm Windows XP does support the format for wallpaper. Don’t know about Win 98.

Not relavent… seems that weather watcher converts the image to bmp format.

Highly unlikely. Even if it did, Windows works very well with BMPs as wallpaper.

EdP is correct. You can only use image formats supported by Windows.

Mike, with XP I have set PNGs as my wallpaper.

Right. As you pointed out, I am not sure which formats are supported by the various Windows versions.

Are you coding for only certain image types to be set as wallpaper or are you letting all images a user displays be set as wallpaper?

Did you try using a .PNG wallpaper? I only tested the commonly used wallpaper formats.

As noted previously, yes.

What would happen to WW if you allowed it to pass to Windows an image it couldn’t handle as wallpaper? Nothing? It would loop? Return an error code? I suspect the 1st item, in which case you should let all files pass but more than likely the 3rd item will happen which you can code for. I don’t see a problem opening it up.

That's how it should be set up now. I'm not sure what would happen if you use an unsupported image. I'll have to try that out [:)]

Ok… My wallpaper is set to http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ridge/lite/NCR/FCX_loop.gif BUTthe file that is displayed is wallpaper.bmp. In the weather watcher directory are 3 image files: wallpaper.bmp (what is displayed) blankwallpaper.gif and trayicon.gif. I would like to use :http://www.srh.noaa.gov/ridge/lite/N0R/FCX_0.png but while I can access it from the map manager png files don’t show up in the list of wallpapers. My previous image was a jpg (noaa changed image formats) and it also showed up in the ww directory as wallpaper.bmp…

Am I missing something… ww is downloading the gif or jpg from the web site but I find no trace of the file on my machine… only wallpaper.bmp.

ringmaster, the wallpaper is displaying okay though, correct?

Yes they display correctly. WW doesn’t list any maps that are png files in the wallpaper option dialog. jpg, gif and bmp formats are listed. png files are listed in all the map dialogs however and display correctly if called from map manager, history, etc.

Here is an unreleased version of Weather Watcher that will allow you to display PNG’s as wallpaper:

http://www.singerscreations.com/files/enablepng/ww.exe

Just download the above file into “C:\Program Files\Weather Watcher”.

Edit: The above download is up now.

I can’t download the file… I just get your homepage… Right click/save file as
saves: singerscreations.htm. Even cut/paste into the address bar just gets me your homepage

It appears to have been fixed. Try it now. RIGHT click, Save Target As…

Give it a try now:
http://www.singerscreations.com/files/enablepng/ww.exe

I got it. But it won’t run. I get an error from windows xp pro that ww.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

I’ve tried downloading from both links. Also the icon is a black square, not the normal ww icon.
