Disable the wallpaper in version 5.6 Beta 3 and up

[:0] But he turned them all off and recycled and rebooted. So HOW are they all on[?][?][?][?]

BTW Thanks for the update.

Mike, is that a Beta Bug under certain conditions?

I’m not sure what she did. She is the only one that I know is having this problem, so that leads me to believe it’s a user error. The settings are definitely not being saved from Weather Watcher – that’s apparent by looking at the contents of the registry key. It almost seems like she is settings the options and then clicking “Cancel” on the Weather Watcher Options window.

I guess it would be possible that she could be running some program that is blocking programs’ access to the registry. That doesn’t seem likely though because there are a lot of Weather Watcher settings already stored to that registry key.

You may be on to something Mike. Iamdragonrider, you may want to run this program and see what autostart programs are listed in the F1, F0, and 04 sections.

Hijack This!

This program checks for many things, including startup programs. Perhaps one of them is blocking changes to your registry.

BTW, I believe the best current resources to fight spyware/adware and other malware -- in addition to a good antivirus program -- are these:
  1. Ad-Aware to find and remove malware
    http://www.lavasoft.de/

  2. Spybot Search and Destroy to find and remove and prevent malware
    http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

  3. Hijack This! to find and remove malware and to list items of interest

  4. Online, personalized support by volunteers

Personally I prefer downloading such apps from the source. For HiJackThis I use http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip.

In addition to Ad-aware & Spybot S&D I like SpywareBlaster from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html.

As for the WW reg fields it is possible that Iamdragonrider is using something to secure the Registry. That would account for the findings. Or, she didn’t click OK after making the changes but rather clicked on the Window’s close X. That would account for the findings also.

I do hope we hear more as to how/why this happened. [:)]

Maybe the initial post should include:

  1. Click the OK button at the bottom of the screen.

  2. Shut down WW and restart it. (?)

After looking into the prooblem some more, it looks like a problem with the old version and new version settings conflicting with each other. It seems that more people should of had this problem.

[:0] Wow!! Thanks for the update Mike.

I know when I did an upgrade, vs a new install, I had a problem with the wallpaper also but the series of steps I told Iamdragonrider to follow are what cleared it for me.

I had the same problem, so had to edit my registry. The one value that was sticking for me was:

“AutoUpdate”=“True”

So, I changed it to False. Hope it works. I really really like the wallpaper feature, but sometimes get tired of looking at the map.

I had similar problems as iamdragonrider and spent hours this morning trying to be rid of the invasive wallpaper.

I actually have two desktop screens. One where all the icons show and another that hides the icons while displaying the same wallpaper…one that I choose.

I’ve been using an older version of WW and was quite pleased with it. I did find it invasive when I installed the Beta and it automatically changed my wallpaper. This function should be turned off by default and let the user decide to run it or not! I went through all the tips and tricks above only to have the wallpaper come back in a static form. I was finally able to be rid of your wallpaper on my first screen, but not on the second until I replaced the static image in the WW program folder.

I must say that for awhile this morning, I was not a happy camper. It was only my knowledge that betas usually have more bugs than a junkyard dog that I was able to persere…LOL

[:(!]Was getting frustrated having to reset the wallpaper. The weather map was taking over. Thanks for your suggestions.
Hopefully now it won’t change to map again.
[:D]Ahhh just checked my picture is there not map. wtg…
thanks
