WWL 7.2.30 Hangs when System returns from Sleep/Standby mode

This is on Windows 8.1.1 x64 Professional with all software at the latest version levels.

Often but not always, WW.exe will hang with a CPU usage of 12.5% when my systems are awakened from Sleep/Standby mode. I do not user hibernate or hyper sleep … just plain old Sleep/Standby.

I have a ww.exe dump available for analysis. It is about 89 megabytes in size zipped. I dumped it prior to killing ww.exe via the Task Manager. If you want me to upload it, please provide instructions.

Re: WWL 7.2.30 Hangs when System returns from Sleep/Standby

I’ll do some testing on that OS to see if I can reproduce that issue. I doubt the dump is going to reveal the actual cause of the problem.

Has this ever occurred when using other versions of Weather Watcher?

Re: WWL 7.2.30 Hangs when System returns from Sleep/Standby

Yes, it has been randomly occurring for several versions back. If my memory serves me correctly, it began around the time V7 releases started.

Re: WWL 7.2.30 Hangs when System returns from Sleep/Standby

How often is often? I put my computer into sleep mode 10 times in a row. Weather Watcher was fine when coming out of sleep mode each time.

FYI, I’m also using Windows 8.1.1 x64 Professional.

Re: WWL 7.2.30 Hangs when System returns from Sleep/Standby

“Often” may be a bit of an overstatement. I would say 1 out every 30-40 sleep returns. I come out of standby perhaps 3-4 times per day. It’s the fact that I have to use the Task Manager to kill ww.exe because it is totally unresponsive that is a bit bothersome.

Re: WWL 7.2.30 Hangs when System returns from Sleep/Standby

Understood. I just wanted to make sure I tested enough to hit the “often” mark.

Re: WWL 7.2.30 Hangs when System returns from Sleep/Standby

Yesterday, I installed the latest version of Dropbox on this system so that I could share a 102 mbyte dump file with another vendor. My upload speed with Suddenlink.net cable is 2.12 mbps so this upload took a little time. During the upload, ww.exe hung at 12.5% CPU utilization and stayed there even after the upload was completed. I had to use the Task Manager to kill ww.exe and then manually restart it.

I feel pretty confident that this problem is associated with how ww.exe handles its internet connection for downloading data, perhaps error recovery. JMO

My system is a 30 mbps cable connection with Suddenlink.net, Motorola SURFBoard SB6141 cable modem running through a ASUS RT-AC68R router.

Re: WWL 7.2.30 Hangs when System returns from Sleep/Standby

There is certainly an issue somewhere. Reproducing the issue is no doubt the fun part though.

Try installing this Weather Watcher build to see if it behaves and better:

Re: WWL 7.2.30 Hangs when System returns from Sleep/Standby

Installed. I’ll monitor it see if the problem resurfaces.

Re: WWL 7.2.30 Hangs when System returns from Sleep/Standby

With WWL V7.2.35, I just had ww.exe at 12.5% CPU usage during a complete system scan by Avira Internet Security 2015 which is my normal security protection program. When the scan complete, ww.exe was hung solid and had to be killed via the task manager.

Re: WWL 7.2.30 Hangs when System returns from Sleep/Standby

I’m thinking the update process might be getting stuck in a loop somewhere. So, I made some changes in the build below to cancel the update if it takes too long. I’m not 100% sure this is the issue since I’m not able to reproduce it, but it’ll at least rule that possibility out.

Re: WWL 7.2.30 Hangs when System returns from Sleep/Standby

Installed and testing on Windows 8.1.1 x64 and Windows 10 B9879 x64 Technical Preview. I agree that it looks like it is something in the update process. Will get back to you on new version results. May take a few days to catch it failing if it is going to.

Re: WWL 7.2.30 Hangs when System returns from Sleep/Standby

Thus far I have had no more hangs by ww.exe with build 7.2.37 either on Windows 8.1.1 x64 or Windows 10 x64 Technical Preview.

Re: WWL 7.2.30 Hangs when System returns from Sleep/Standby

This specific hanging problem returned with a vengeance on Windows 10 x64 Professional with hangs frequently occurring when returning from standby mode and randomly occurring when doing such maintenance steps as security scanning the system, optimizing SSDs, etc.

Six weeks ago I built a super fast gaming computer with 3 monitors, dual SSDs, I7-6700K CPU, RipJaws 3200 DDR4 RAM, Windows 10 x64 Professional and then ported all my software including WWL over to the gaming computer. As with my previous computers, I set up WWL with 4 magnets showing 4 different weather maps. I always clustered these and put them on the 3rd monitor on my previous computers. However, on the new system I was unable to get them to stay/lock in the desired position on the 3rd monitor. And the hanging problem increased significantly on this super fast gaming computer.

Because of the magnet inability to stay in a locked position, I created a Rainmeter skin that displays the weather maps and discontinued using the magnet feature of WWL. The attached image shows the skin which is what I was trying to accomplish with the magnet feature of WWL (and had been successful in locking the position on my previous computers with multiple monitors).

Since abandoning the magnet feature I have had absolutely no WWL hangs under any circumstance. This is as of 4.5 weeks ago. I have to conclude that the hangs were being caused while attempting to refresh the magnets. You may wish to examine this area of coding and see if you can fix it.

I am running WWL V7.2.56

Re: WWL 7.2.30 Hangs when System returns from Sleep/Standby

Which URL were you using for your magnet? I’d like to try the same magnet just in case it’s only an issue with certain URLs.
