My Weather Watcher disappears!

I have Weather Watcher installed for automatic startup on my Windows XP (Pro) laptop. Sits there in the taskbar, shows me the hourly forecast for Toronto, all great. But after the computer’s been on and used for a while, it’s not there any more. Alt-Tab doesn’t show it, and it’s not in the taskbar. But Ctl-Alt-Delete says it’s running, except “Switch To” still won’t show it. If I try to start it (as if it’s not running), I get a 2-second hourglass, then nothing. I use the Ctl-Alt-Del Task Manager to End Task, then start it again, and all is well for a while.

What’s the problem, and what’s the solution?

If you’re using XP, you sure it isn’t getting hidden in the systemtray by the XP systemtray autohide feature.

Also, again, if XP, try this:

C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\ Delete any files in there and reboot…

You’ll note your computer runs a bit slower on the next boot or so, but it’ll speed up quite dramatically again, after a few boots. This always fixes my problems with systray icons. M$ hasn’t figured it out yet…

Thanks for the response. But no, it really disappears.

And I have to wipe them all out, not just (say) WW54BSETUP.EXE-248310C2.pf? I may try it, if nothing else works. Meanwhile, I’m getting WW to work, just have to Ctrl-Alt-Del close it then reopen it occasionally.

Do notice the icons disappears after going into Sleep Mode, etc.?

First off, that's the installer's prefetch file, so it wouldn't fix your problem. Sometimes deleting the ww.exe-whatever.pf and the dl.exe-whatever.pf makes it work. But I also have this problem with other systray icons, so I always just delete all of them... I wish I could figure out why XP does that...

For me, it's just when rebooting, I haven't used sleep/hibernate in over a year now.

[:(]

Same problem with a brand-new install on my WinXP Pro. Icon in systray is gone–no amount of rebooting helps.

Can access program at will but just no icon. Maddening!

Think I may have solved the problem (at least for me). Added a shortcut to STARTUP folder (even tho settings within Weather Watcher had option set to start when Windows starts), rebooted and icon is now showing in systray.

Will monitor for a few hours and post if anything changes, otherwise this may be the fix.

yes, I have a icon in the startup folder too, the startup option didn’t work on some installs…

Thanks, all. All I’ve done so far is NOT MINIMIZE. In fact, I changed the option so clicking on the URH-corner “X” closes WW instead of minimizing. I just leave it full-size and put other program windows over it. When I want to check WW, I just minimize the other programs (or, if I’m running a million programs, I hit “Desktop” =~ “Minimize All”, then open one program and minimize it).

That seems to work OK, except now I have a new problem (which I’ll post on its own, if a search won’t find it):

WW’s hourly forecast always starts at Midnight tomorrow, rather than starting an hour (or less) from now. It’s starting a day (or less) from now instead of an hour (or less) from now! My clock and calendar seem fine (re-set with About Time), closing and opening WW doesn’t solve it, nor does re-booting. I looked for a WW.ini file to delete, but I couldn’t find it easily.

I don’t get that…
